Visual Thinking School Colombia: ¿Qué es SKETCHPLANATIONS y por qué iniciaste el proyecto? ¿Cómo surgió la idea de SKETCHPLANATIONS?

Jonathan Hey: SKETCHPLANATIONS es la idea simple de explicar un concepto con un sketch. Comencé SKETCHPLANATIONS como una manera de continuar mi esfuerzo diario para mejorar mis habilidades de dibujar, mientras trabajaba en cómo explicar cosas concisas visualmente. Siempre una habilidad manual.

VTS Colombia: ¿Cuál es el impacto de SKETCHPLANATIONS en las personas? ¿Cómo ha sido la acogida?

JH: Yo hago SKETCHPLANATIONS para mí, pero desde que empecé a publicarlos mucha gente se enganchó y empezó a seguirlos online y por mail. Muy rara vez puedo predecir cuáles van a ser populares.

VTS Colombia: ¿Cree que otras personas deberían usar el pensamiento visual como herramienta para su trabajo?

JH: ¡Absolutamente! Casi que cada vez que alguien toma un esfero en una conversación grupal y empieza a plasmar visualmente los pensamientos y la conversación, las cosas mejoran. También es una buena manera de comunicar tus propias ideas. Algunas personas trabajan bien con palabras, pero otras lo hacen mejor con imágenes. Ser capaz de hacer las dos, maximiza las posibilidades de comunicarte bien.

VTS Colombia: ¿Qué beneficios tendrían las personas? ¿Usted lo usa para su trabajo?

JH: A las personas les gusta trabajar con otros que se comuniquen claramente. Y si puedes explicar tus ideas y las de otros, entonces tienes una mayor posibilidad de que tus ideas sean adoptadas y aceptadas y que el equipo esté sincronizado (en la misma página) de la labor. A veces se requiere de algo de coraje para tomar un esfero en una reunión, pero casi siempre vale la pena.

VTS Colombia: ¿Te inspiraste en alguien más en el uso del pensamiento visual para tu trabajo?

JH: Creciendo y como un ingeniero en proceso, siempre amé los dibujos de Da Vinci ya que son hermosos, técnicamente impresionantes y útiles. Aprendí mucho del equipo de Jump Associates en California acerca del valor y la técnica de registrar conversaciones en tiempo real para obtener mejores conversaciones y registros útiles después. Mike Rohde ha hecho mucho para compartir y fomentar el pensamiento visual, al igual que Dan Roam. También he aprendido mucho de los libros de Edward Tufte acerca de gráficos de datos. Para una inspiración más reciente, me encanta el libro Experiences in Visual Thinking de Bob McKim.

VTS Colombia: ¿Qué le preguntaría en la entrevista al siguiente speaker del Visual Thinking Colombia?

JH: ¿Cuál es la mejor configuración para el pensamiento visual utilizando herramientas digitales? No he podido encontrar nada que sea tan bueno como lápiz y el papel.

Visual Thinking School Colombia: What is SKETCHPLANATIONS and why did you started this project? How did you have the idea to do SKETCHPLANATIONS?

Jonathan Hey: Sketchpanations are the simple idea of explaining a single concept in a sketch.

I started Sketchplanations as a way to continue a daily effort to improve my drawing while working how to explain things concisely with visuals. Always a handy skill.

VTS Colombia: What is the impact in the people with these SKETCHPLANATIONS? How is the reception?

JH: I do Sketchplanations for myself, but since I started publishing them they’ve picked up lots of people following on online and by email. I find I can very rarely predict which ones will be popular.

VTS Colombia: Do you think other people might use visual thinking as a tool in their work?

JH: Absolutely! Almost every time someone picks up a pen in a group conversation and starts to make the thinking and conversation visible it improves things. It’s also a great way to communicate your own ideas. Some people work well with words, but some do better with pictures. Being able to do both maximises your chances of communicating well.

VTS Colombia: What benefits would it bring to them? Do you use that for your job?

JH: People like working with others who communicate clearly. And if you can explain your ideas and others’ then you’ve got a better chance of your ideas being adopted and the team getting on the same page about the task. Sometimes it takes a little courage to pick up a pen in a meeting but it’s almost always worth it.

VTS Colombia: Did you get inspired by someone else in the use of visual thinking in your work?

JH: Growing up, and as a budding engineer, I always loved Da Vinci’s drawings which are beautiful, technically impressive and useful. I learned a lot from the team at Jump Associates in California about the value and technique of capturing conversations real time for better conversations and useful records afterwards. Mike Rohde has done a huge amount for sharing and encouraging visual thinking as has Dan Roam. I have also learned a lot from Edward Tufte’s books about data graphics. For an earlier inspiration I love the book Experiences in Visual Thinking by Bob McKim.

VTS Colombia: What would you ask to the next speaker that the Visual Thinking School Colombia interview?

JH: What’s the best set up for visual thinking using digital tools? I’ve still not cracked anything that’s as good as pen and paper.
